I used to do that driving my Isuzu P'up, not so much for the other manuals.

I actually had to do that in my Dad's Bronco- that 4-speed was a royal bitch when it came time to put it in fourth gear, so I had to fairly slam it in.

Nope. Between first and second and third and fourth, my shifter is so short I can just snudge it in place. I might do that if I had a sixth gear, but Reverse is sitting where the sixth should be, so I don't think it's a good idea to shift into that ad highway speeds :p

Still less creepy than a dildo shift-knob.

I used to drive a '95 YJ 5 speed for about 5 years. I still think it would be uncomfortable. I have long arms though, and I learned on that car, so I guess it was always just normal to me.

Only do it from 5th to 6th, but not to that extreme. It is more like a shove with my hand facing the way it is in the picture.

Only between 3rd and 4th and occasionally when changing down from 5th to 4th (my car only has a 5-speed :( ).

I do it. I also sometimes reach over and shift with the left hand if I'm multi-tasking. Good times.

I don't really know why, but when I see people shifting like that it really bugs me. It's not like that's a natural position for your hand.

Kinja'd!!! BKRM3 > The man in the iron mask

Eh, not really. In fact I'm going the other way these days and actually shifting as lightly as possible...you really only need 2 fingers. My (HPDE) instructor pointed out that developing a light touch when shifting is probably the most effective way to make sure you don't ever have a money shift on track. There's simply no reason to muscle the gearbox. Also, neat trick for the 5-4 downshift is to tip the shifter out of 5 and let it center itself for a fraction of a second and then knock it straight back into 4. The centering spring places it right where it needs to be for going down to 4th. If you grab it and try to pull it from 5 to 4 you might **crinnnnge** hit second by mistake.

I realize this truck driver thing really only applies to upshifts, but I'm convinced that anyone who needs to develop shifting skills for a track setting would benefit from developing a lighter touch. Mister mustangman wasn't adding anything by shifting that way...

+1

Jamming the shifter only abuses the linkage. You can still get quick shifts with a light touch.

Yup. I do it sometimes. It started because my IS 300's shifter is a big ball of chrome that likes to get hot.
